Lark of Yesteryear Ghosts of Yesteryear Series Book 1 eBook Mary Zinda
If you like creepy ghost stories, as I do, you'll enjoy this one. Told from the point of view of a young girl, Lark, who doesn't realize at first that she's a ghost and has been dead for 138 years. She watches the visitors who come and go to her old house which is now a museum. The comments from the visitors amuse and confuse her. Why don't they know what a meat grinder is? Why do they think an outhouse is funny? But most of all, she longs for someone to notice her because she's so lonely. She's also afraid of her father who seems to have turned into some vengeful being, the complete opposite of what he used to be. Finally, a young boy named Owen does hear her and feels her presence. But their friendship takes a turn when Lark starts to remember the events of the great Peshtigo fire that wreaked tragedy on her family and many others so long ago.Ms. Zinda gives the reader well-developed characters complete with flaws and hopes and conflicts. Her ghosts are appropriately scary and her careful attention to historical details and vivid writing make this a spine-tingling read.

Lark of Yesteryear Ghosts of Yesteryear Series Book 1 eBook Mary Zinda Reviews
This book was hauntingly beautiful. It was extremely well-written, and I found few instances when the book was slow-moving. The characters are well-developed in this book, and I loved the fact that even near the end of the book, I kept learning new things about the characters.
I'll be honest and say that the ending was predictable, but I couldn't see the book concluding any other way. In fact, if it ended up differently, I would have been sorely disappointed. However, this book does not disappoint at all.
If you enjoy ghost stories, you'll enjoy this book. However, do not expect this to be a typical horror book. You won't find immense amounts of gore or violence here.
A beautifully written book in a soft mellow tone, reminiscent of the likes of Carlos Ruiz Zafon, Lauren Oliver's Liesl and Po and even Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book. It captured my heart and imagination from the very first line and didn't let go, even after turning the last page.
The descriptions of the time talked about by Lark are clearly well observed, as are the thoughts, behaviours and characteristics of Lark herself meaning you are able to immerse yourself into the story completely caught up in her world. The intricate details and observations are so skilfully woven together to make up this wonderful story and the gentle way that the story unfolds meant that I just couldn't help but keep reading until I had finished in one go.
The book is edited and presented to a highly professional standard, so nothing takes away from the enjoyment of this skilled writer who has a truly lovely writing style.
I so enjoyed reading it and I really can't recommend this book highly enough. It will stay with me for a very long time and deserves a place on everyone's book shelf.
