Every square inch of illustration is full of soul and detail. And the story is a pleasantly unique rendering of the original, as well. I would place this in a tie with P.J. Lynch's also-masterful illustrated rendition of this beloved European folk tale.In this case, the Heroine is allowed to be have a flawed character, resulting in her character's turning point, rather than merely being fearful or curious. This allows her to have a character arch that is more inspiring - She doesn't wallow in her error, but seeks to make it right, rising above her former self. She doesn't just save the prince. She redeems herself, and yet not in an unrealistic completely self-reliant way. She journeys on the hope of help from kind supernatural beings, rather than the promise of it. That requires no little bravery and strength of will. Then, when in the hands of the enemy, she humbles herself and yet is also very cunning at the same time. So much depth in a female Heroine is not met often enough. This is a must-own for the collector of either fairy tales or Mayer's work.

East of the Sun and West of the Moon Mercer Mayer 9780689711138 Books Reviews
This book has some of my favourite illustrations (in stiff competition with 'Everyone Knows What a Dragon Looks Like' also by Mayer).
It is perplexing to me why we don't see more works like this from him. Instead, we are apparently meant to suffer thru such works as 'Little Critter Merry Christmas, Little Critter!.' It's not that they are so bad, but when you have books like the former, they seem like kind of a waste.
We bought this book because we loved the book "East" by Edith Pattou. This book is the more traditional telling of the story and is god but "East" is an easier read. We still loved the story and have kept this book even through several moves across country. If you are into Fairy tales and are tired of the usual ones, this would be a good book for you.
Delightful to look at, delightful to hold, but when I read the blurb, We had to mark it "Sold" ! a children's book - naturally... how can you go wrong? WE grew up with Grimm's fairy tales and other things we though were benign, but seeing them remade into movies and different venues, they weren't so innocent, were they? lol - These, today, were written by younger folk, who have broken the old habits we had of Snow White and Rumpelstiltskin... Can't go wrong with these books.. seriously.
This was a childhood favorite of mine...when I "outgrew" it we gave to my younger cousins with several other books...over the years they ended up donated to charity. I was so pleased to get my hands on an original copy. It even smells like the old library- in perfect condition...Thank you for offering recycled books that bring back wonderful childhood times!
With amiable writing and lavish illustration, Mercer Mayer has brought this beloved Norwegian fairy tale to life for young children everywhere. The original fairy tale told the story of a poor farmer's daughter, and her quest to find an enchanted prince, who was whisked away to a distant kingdom to marry a hideous troll. The kingdom was so far away that it was somewhere east of the sun and west of the moon.
Mercer retells the tale in a way to make it more appealing to modern children and their parents, so the prince has now been transformed into a frog in Mercer's version, not the ferocious bear of the original that modern audiences would find somewhat disquieting. The changes generally work for a children's tale, and Mercer adds some nice touches - for example, early in the tale, he gives a sense of the medieval world that the girl grows up in, with its courting youths and its distant kings.
What really drew me to Mercer's tale, however, were the illustrations. Magical and yet conveying a strong Scandinavian flavor so fitting for this tale, these watercolor illustrations captivate the eye and evoke a strong sense of wonder. The strange, magical creatures depicted in the illustrations are amazingly well done. Consider, for example, the depiction of Father Forest being as an enormous tree with gnarled, wooden feet and hands, two enormous eyes that stare down at the maiden in a fatherly and yet god-like way, and a nose that is formed from the large, broken bough. Conceptually, this depiction of Father Forest is nothing new, but the execution of it is simply amazing. There is also a Salamander in its fiery cave, who is depicted as somehow both enormously old and yet child-like at the same time, and the North Wind, who is characterized as a powerful, god-like being with long, streaming hair and beard and power hands.
Most compelling of all, however, is the depiction of the farmer's daughter, who is given an enormous range of emotional expression in the illustrations from just the subtlest changes to her eyes. The changes might be subtle, yet they are powerful nonetheless, instantly conveying happiness, bitterness, sorrow, fear, weariness, and bliss. Children will be drawn to her immediately, and to the fantastical, magical world in which she lives.
The lovely story and gorgeous illustrations are worth 5 stars. However, I feel the need to post about the 2017 re-print. The pages do not fit inside the cover. The binding is two staples. I was so excited to finally have a new copy but my 30 year old used copies are in better condition.
This was my favorite book when I was a little girl, I used to love the illustrations and would read again and again. When my 6 year old daughter recently asked me what my favorite book was when I was a kid, I tried to retell the story for her. I forgot so many of the details, so I decided to order it for her (and me.) I can't wait to give it to her. I had forgotten about the demons taking the prince and I hope that part won't scare her. The book itself isn't in the best shape. The first copy I received was torn at the cover, and through 10 pages. sent me another one that's creased but at least not torn. So the materials are pretty cheap, and just held by a couple of staples. But it's a beautiful story with beautiful illustrations and I'm excited to share it with my daughter.
